Photographing it with a smart telescope
The Sun is 0.526° across. During totality the inner corona spreads to about 1.6°, and that glow is what makes the photo. This is how the native frame of each telescope handles it:

Tips for the day
- Practise on the normal Sun in the weeks before, with the solar filter your telescope maker supplies or approves for that model.
- Set up early and level the mount: the partial phases take more than an hour each, totality only minutes.
- Totality is the only moment the filter can come off. Put it back on as soon as the first bright point of the Sun reappears.
- Let the telescope run and watch totality with your own eyes; it is over before you know it.
